New Music Theory Worksheet on Eighth Notes

A new free music theory worksheet has been posted on eighth notes.  While the eighth note was introduced in the previous lesson, this worksheet allows the student to practice counting eighth notes.

This free printable music theory worksheet teaches how to draw eighth notes with a flag or a beam.  When written by itself, an eighth note looks like a quarter note with a flag attached to it.  If the stem is up, the flag comes down on the right side of the note.  If the stem is down, the flag comes up from the right side of the note.  If two or more eight notes appear in a row, the eighth notes are connected with a horizontal line on top or bottom called a beam.

An eighth note has a value of half of a beat.  That means two eighth notes equal one quarter note, or one beat.  When writing the counts, use a plus sign (+) for eighth notes.

New Music Theory Worksheet on the Grand Staff

This music theory worksheet introduces the grand staff and the notes on the entire range of the staff.  The grand staff represents the treble staff and bass staff joined together.  The brace is a curved line and bar line that combines the treble and bass staff.  A ledger line is a small line added to the note when it is either above or below the staff.  The Middle C note is on the ledger line that is between the treble and bass staff.

In this worksheet, students can practice the grand staff by adding the brace, bar lines, and clefs to bar lines.

New Music Theory Worksheet on Rests and Stems

This music theory worksheet is the next lesson in the basic rhythm worksheet series.  It introduces musical rests and note stems.  The duration of musical silence is indicated by different types of rests.  It also explains the rules to follow when drawing stems on half notes and quarter notes.  If notes are below the third line, the stems are drawn downward on the left side of the notehead.  If the notes are on or above the third line, the stems are drawn upward on the right side of the notehead.

In this worksheet, students can practice drawing different types of rests and combining this concept with different types of notes.
